[Bookplate for John Wingfield Larking] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, ermine, charged with three heads of wildcats, possibly lions. Above the escutcheon is a closed helmet, placed in profile, denoting the rank of an esquire or a gentleman, from which, elaborate mantling flows. Upon the helmet is a curved wreath, with a crest of a bird, wings elevated and displayed, holding a branch in its beak. 2. [Bookplate for Cosmo Nevill] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, divided per cross. Quarters one and four are gules (red), charged with a saltier, ermine (fur, white powdered with black tufts). Quarters two and three are argent (silver), with a fretty of eight pieces, gules. Quarters two and three have a canton at dexter chief, divided per pale, or (gold) and argent, charged with a galley with three masts. Above the primary escutcheon is a grated helmet at three-quarters profile (denoting a degree of peerage under a duke). Above the helmet is a straight wreath charged with a ducal coronet around an ox head, erased and ermine. Radiating from the helmet and escutcheon is elaborate mantling. Beneath the escutcheon is a banner, with Latin motto within. 3. [Bookplate for Francis Lawson] This heraldic bookplate consists of a chippendale styled escutcheon, argent (silver) parted per pale ; first, argent, with a saltier, azure (blue), the upper part charged with three garbs, the lower a boar's head, and at dexter and sinister an etoile each ; second, argent, depicting a wolf salient, climbing a tree, vert (green), possibly oak. Above the escutcheon is a straight wreath, charged with a boar's head and below the escutcheon the name and location of the bookplate's owner. The entire escutcheon and accompanying text are surrounded by elaborate chippendale borders. 4. [Bookplate for Alexandri Barbaro] This elaborately decorated bookplate consists of an argent (silver) escutcheon with a gules (red) annulet at the fess point, or centre. The annulet is often the mark of the fifth son. Atop the shield is a diadem or ducal coronet. On either side of the shield are flags and branches, and on the right is a horn. The bookplate is double-framed, first on the interior with a rectangular chaplet, and then on the exterior edge with a double line. 5. [Bookplate for Winfred Overholser] This bookplate's design is a pictoral scene of a tall ship at sea, with gales of wind blowing at the sails and water. Bookplate text at base. In black ink. 6. [Bookplate by G.H.] This bookplate's design features a ship sailing through windy seas with a large cloud in the background. 7. [Bookplate for Eric L. Swanick] This bookplate is executed with green ink on white paper. The green ink is in the shape of an oval through which the design appears in white. On the top of the oval is depicted a swan floating on water, which is depicted directly above the name Eric L. Swanick. From each end of the name a design emerges that forms a decorative border. 8. [Bookplate for Henri Rainville] This bookplate depicts a large, bespectacled rat, dressed in what appears to be eighteenth-century attire and displaying a prominent tail and whiskers. Facing away from the viewer, the rat is seated at a table in front of a window, through which the leaves of a tree can be seen. The rodent holds a quill pen and is poised to continue writing in a book that is propped open on the table with a second, closed volume. 9. [Bookplate for George Herbert Wailes] This bookplate consists of a combination of heraldic and pictorial elements. At the centre, is an ovular frame containing an image of a nude woman in a crouching position, and holding a flower pot in her open hands. From the pot, stands a single flower. Above the frame is a small escutcheon, argent (silver), charged with a crane. The crest is a dexter helm, itself topped by a straight wreath, and a horseman's spur and strap, accompanied on either side by a pair of wings erect. Behind the crest is a banner containing the Latin motto. 10. [Bookplate for Margarethe Schwarzwald and J. E. Horvath] This beautiful bookplate in black ink on thin brown paper presents us with a view of a village and a hill top castle through an opening in the trees. In the foreground is a stack of books, with one book open facing the observer, and a vase filled with flowers. 11. [Bookplate for Sibyl MacDonald] The bookplate is divided into two sections. The first section shows an unpaved road winding through a wooded scene with mountains in the background. In the second section is printed Sybil MacDonald's name in red ink. 12. [Bookplate for Thomas Nickleson Jeffery by C. W. Torbett] The armorial bookplate features a coat of arms. The escutcheon (shield) appears to be the impalement, or combining, of two distinct coats of arms into one shield. The dexter (right) shield is quartered: the repeated pattern features naiant (swimming) dolphins in an azure chevron between three leopard faces ; roses in a divided field of ermine (white with black tincture) and erminois (gold with black tincture) ; and a pheon (barbed arrow head) over an embattled field of sable and azure. Sinister (left) is a lion passant (lion depicted facing and walking to the left), which appears to be the shield of Jeffrey’s family through marriage, the Uniackes. Above the shield is a crest featuring a tree and a leopard with a horizontal anchor under its paw. Below the shield is a motto. 13. [Bookplate] Textual bookplate with black ink stamped on ivory paper. 14. [Bookplate for British Association for the Advancement of Science] Red and black ink on white paper. Coat of arms at top. Quartered shield shows English rose, Scottish thistle, Irish clover and Canadian beaver. Text in a bordered circle around shield. Cursive text below. Contributors include British Association. 15. [Bookplate for Dufferin School John Frothingham Library] Printed in navy ink, a geometric border with ornate corners surrounds the text of multiple fonts. The coat of arms of Montreal is raised in red with accompanying banners. The shield is topped with a crown and features a red saltire with four charges between the arms: a rose, thistle, clover, and beaver. The bookplate includes a watermark. 16. A clock tower is visible through a stone, oval, window. In the upper right and left corners are shields: On the left side is an or shield with a displayed double-headed bird ; on the chest of the bird is an argent shield with a vert fess. The shield on the right side is sable with a ship.
